CPR, or cardiopulmonary resuscitation, is a procedure performed when the heart stops beating. It is typically used after a cardiac arrest or other similar event.
Call 911 or find and instruct another bystander to call. Get an AED or instruct someone else to do so.
Before getting involved, make sure that the surroundings are safe for you. Check for hazards such as glass on the ground or toxic substances.
If the person does not respond and is not breathing, or is only gasping, begin CPR.
Ensure the person is on a hard, flat surface. Kneel besides them. Place the heel of one hand in the center of their chest and clasp with your other hand. Your shoulders and elbows should be in a straight line and locked. Push hard and fast into the center of the chest to a depth of approximately 2 inches. Compressions should be performed at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute. If performing rescue breaths, use a face shield and alternate between 30 compressions and 2 breaths.
Follow the instructions of the machine. Clear the area and attach the pads to the person according to the image on the instructions. Deliver shocks as instructed by the AED, ensuring that no other people are in contact with the machine or the person receiving the shocks. Resume CPR compressions until medical assistance arrives.
